Transmission System
In automobiles, the power
developed by the engine is ultimately aimed to turn the wheels so that the
vehicle can move on the road
Power developed by the
engine will be transmitted to various
components and finally turn the wheels
These components all
together is known as transmission system
Components of transmission system
·
Clutch
·
Gear box (also called as Transmission)
·
Universal joints
·
Propeller shaft
·
Differential
Clutch
·
It is located between engine and gear box
·
It engages and disengages power from engine
to gear box
·
When engaged, power flows from engine to
gear box
and vehicle moves
·
When disengaged, power does not flow and
vehicle
stops though the engine is still in running condition
Location of clutch
Gear Box
·
It is located between clutch and propeller
shaft
·
It consists set of gears
·
It Increases or decreases the engine
speed/torque
·
High torque is require when vehicle is
pulling more
loads, climbing hill and starting form rest
Location of Gear box
Universal Joints
·
A
universal joint makes flexible connection between two rigid shafts, which are
at an angle and transmits power
·
There will be two universal joints in
transmission system
·
One
universal joint is located between gear box
main shaft and propeller shaft
·
The other one is between other end of
propeller shaft and the differential
Location of Universal Joints
Propeller Shaft
·
It is located between gear box and differential
·
Connected to them with a universal joint at
each end
·
It
transmits power from gear box to differential
Location
of Propeller Shaft
Differential
·
It
is located at the end of propeller shaft
·
It
serves two purposes
1.Transmits power at right angle from the
propeller shaft to the real axle
2.Provides relative motion to the rear
wheels, when vehicle takes turn
Location of Differential
